Description

Gateway to a large yet enchanting island

Just an hour away from Athens, the city of Halkida – gateway to the rest of Evia and capital of Greece’s second largest island – has a vibrant personality of its own and a long family-friendly promenade that is full of local food eateries and cafés. Quality seafood and meats are found on the menus of the seaside tavernas and restaurants, and if you ask beforehand you’ll be surprised at the vegetarian and vegan options that could be on offer here. Do try the local cheese bread, an Evia specialty, known as Tiropsomo in Greek. As you sit and enjoy yourself right near the water, you might notice a phenomenon that can’t easily be explained by science, namely the gushing waters of the Gulf of Evia which change direction almost every day and which mark one of the city’s most famous curiosities. This is an easily walkable town that’s perfect to watch the lifestyle of the locals and Greek visitors who come from nearby destinations for a city break.

On the mainland side of Evia, the Karababa Castle on hill amid pine trees is an attraction worth visiting. Built by the Ottomans in 1684, it played a role in protecting the city from the Venetians. The castle’s walls are impressive, so is the clock tower from 1895. History buffs can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Halkida and the remains of the Roman aqueduct (Kamares). Attractions from more recent times include the Folklore Museum, several Byzantine churches and the Emir Zade mosque from the days of Turkish rule. Halkida is also a springboard to discover the gorgeous spots of Central Evia, including the traditional mountain village of Steni, the nearby Temple of Artemis and the many beaches on both sides of this elongated island.
