Description

An unknown Macedonian gem of a city

Classical European cities that have the sea on three sides are very often beautiful, and Kavala is no exception. What makes Kavala attractive though is much more than the sea. It has a more Anatolian/oriental feel and a rich history based on the once-flourishing tobacco trade. Majestic mansions and cobble-stone streets mingle with historic quarters and gems from the Ottoman era such as the Imaret, now a classy hotel. Weaving its way through the city is a 16th century aqueduct, known as Kamares, that was purportedly built over another from the Roman era, while the old castle or Kastro on a hilltop overlooks the city in all its splendor. Noteworthy as well are the old tobacco warehouses in different parts of the city that have been mostly repurposed and that stand witness to a financially well-off town that once boasted numerous high-end theatres, haute couture tailor shops, fine patisseries, traditional cafés and old-era dance halls.

Kavala’s rich cultural history has also led to a developed culinary experience, as its gastronomic delights include local ingredients such as potato, chestnuts, honey, seafood, free-range goat meat and much more. Regional wineries and the locally made Tsipouro spirit add to the gastronomic delights, so does a finer breed of oriental sweets that are hard to find even in the Greek capital. On the historical front, right next to Kavala lies the ancient city of Philippi, designated a UNESCO world heritage site that reflects the region’s strong Macedonian heritage, while also showcasing remnants of all the other cultures and civilizations that have conquered it. Kavala is generally off the visitors’ tourist maps, which has ironically preserved its intricate charm and multifaceted attractions for those who want authentic experiences. If you like to combine a visit to Kavala with a beach holiday, you’ll be happy to know that the adjacent beach of Nea Peramos is gorgeous, and the nearby island of Thassos will certainly satisfy any beach cravings. If you’re travelling to Northern Greece, you would do well to put Kavala on your itinerary!
