Description
Greece’s fabulous island of the north
If you find yourself in Northern Greece, make a point to visit Thassos. This is one of the lesser known islands in Greece, yet beautifully mixes history and tradition with nature and crystalline beaches. Believe it or not, the island was inhabited some 2500 years ago, with evidence of an ancient agora at Limenas dating from the 4th to the 6th century BC. There are remains of an ancient theatre not far away, as remains from the ancient kingdom of Alyki and an adjacent marble quarry from antiquity on the other side of the island. Many more ruins exist on this historically important island and the Archeological Museum of Thassos can unlock its ancient past to visitors. A more recent look into local lore can be revealed through the island’s two folklore museums and the Vagis Sculpture Museum. Visit the old port of Limenaria to stroll around and have a coffee, consider a visit to the mythological cave of Pan, and pass by the intriguing Monastery of Archangel Michael in Livadi for some breathtaking views of the sea from the hilltop.
If you’re visiting in summer, there are over 30 beaches to enjoy, many of which are equipped with beach chairs and umbrellas, such as the family-friendly Golden Beach, Paradise Beach and Alyki Beach. There’s a lot of diving to be enjoyed around the island, so find a diving club near you and embark on a new adventure. Land lovers on the other hand will appreciate the hiking paths that crisscross the island, complete with dense vegetation in some areas and gorgeous vistas of the North Aegean Sea. You might also enjoy the natural rocky pond known as Giola Lagoon, where many daring swimmers jump in from a rocky height of 8 meters (around 26 feet). Lastly, you’ll find a very diverse offering in terms of accommodation, from big resorts and town hotels to rent-a-rooms and village guesthouses. We’ll be happy to arrange a trip to Thassos so just get in touch and we’ll do the rest.
